SA BANS SINGLE-USE PLASTICS IN STRONG MOVE FOR SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING INDUSTRY

Here’s a breakdown of why this is important, and how we can help

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA?

From March 2021, South Australia will be banning the distribution, supply, and sale of the following single-use plastic items:

-Plastic Straws
-Plastic Cutlery
-Plastic Beverage Stirrers

In 2022, this ban will extend to single-use polystyrene cups, bowls, clamshell boxes, and plates, with a pathway for more items to be banned in the future.

WHY IS SINGLE USE PLASTIC SO HARMFUL?
Single-use plastic items pollute our natural environment, harm wildlife, and can take hundreds of years to decompose, releasing hamful chemicals in the process.

Plastic Packaging is the largest source of plastic pollution globally, accounting for over 40% of global plastic use.

In SA, from 2022 onwards, oxo-degradable plastics (plastics that break down into micro-plastics) are not a suitable alternative, and will also be banned.

This means that paper and cardboard-based alternatives will increasingly become the norm.

WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK OF THIS?
99% of surveyed SA residents recognised the environmental problems associated with single-use plastics

96% of surveyed SA residents agreed that government intervention on this issue was necessary
